Installation of a SONEXcurtain™ Enclosure System Around a Large Metal Turning Lathe at a Machine Tool Shop Solved a Severe Noise Problem

Turning Lathe

The installation of a SONEXcurtain Enclosure System around a large metal turning lathe at a machine tool shop in White Bear Lake, MN, solved a severe noise problem that was adversely affecting all workers in the plant.

Enclosure System Around a Large Metal Turning Lathe

The noise from the lathe measured 96 decibels near the machine. This required workers to wear ear protection while operating the lathe. However, because the shop contained concrete floors, painted concrete block walls and a metal ceiling, reverberation in the plant was severe. Although other machines in the plant were not particularly noisy, all the workers were bothered by the noise from this one machine.

An octave band analysis of the noise produced by the lathe determined the noise was greatest in the range from 500 to 3,000 Hz, the same frequency range as human speech. While sufficiently loud noise in these frequency bands can damage hearing, it can also interfere with verbal communication between workers, reducing productivity as well as safety.

Solution

The solution was to surround the noisy lathe with illbruck's Sonexcurtain BB Enclosure System, a barrier-backed system of flexible panels featuring both sound absorption and a sound barrier. These panels feature willtec material backed with a reinforced loaded vinyl barrier.

The flexible curtains are easily moved for access to the machine for operation or maintenance. In addition, the tough exterior barrier backing and rugged vinyl-faced quilted willtec interior offer maximum durability.

Result

The panels work to both absorb noise produced by the machine and to contain the noise within the curtained area. After the SONEXcurtain Enclosure was installed, the measured noise level dropped over 20 decibels on average to approximately 74 decibels. This eliminated the need for individual ear protection for the machine's operators, and significantly reduced the overall level of noise in the shop, says Rauch.

illbruck manufactures a broad range of attractive acoustical ceiling tiles, wall panels, baffles, and other noise control products for commercial and industrial applications, including: SQUARELINE® Metal Ceiling Tiles, HARMONI™ and WHITELINE™ Ceiling Tiles, CONTOUR® Wall and Ceiling Tiles, FABRITEC™ Wall Panels, SONEX® Wall Panels and Baffles, and PROSPEC® Barriers and Composites.
