A Historic Inn Becomes a Quiet Refuge for Weary Travelers
with the Help of PROSPEC® Barriers

Dan Lickle and his wife, Missy, own the Inn at Montchanin Village, a historic village of eleven buildings near Wilmington, Delaware that they began renovating into an inn and restaurant in the mid 1990s. Their plan was to convert the buildings into guest rooms and suites, complete with all modern conveniences, including wet bars and kitchenettes.

As rooms were completed, the Lickles began opening them for guests. It wasn't long before complaints were rolling in about noise in adjoining rooms. Fortunately, it was early on in the renovation process, so the Lickles turned to their builder, Peter Sanger of Willingtown Construction, for help.

"That's when I decided that prevention was the best way to go," Dan says. "I wanted to prevent any complaints early on in the process, rather than tell guests there was nothing I could do, or try and fix the problem after renovation."

The first problem to tackle was the shared walls. Sheetrock and studs actually help to transmit sound and unfortunately, carpet and curtains are of little help. Sanger was experienced at dealing with acoustical problems. But he needed to do some research to come up with a plan for soundproofing the rooms without compromising the old-world charm of the Inn.

 After searching several companies websites, Sanger decided to contact illbruck and request a sample of a PROSPREC Barrier. Made from high-density vinyl, PROSPEC Barriers dissipate sound, effectively blocking its transmission. The 1/8-inch thick vinyl, shipped in 20 or 60-foot rolls that are 54-inches wide, is perfect for new construction when woven through staggered stud walls that a re six inches thick rather than the standard four-inch wall.

"The results of our experiment were phenomenal," said Sanger. "We set a radio or TV at 80 or 85 decibels in one room and couldn't pick it up in the adjoining room."

The Lickle's are happy with their invisible soundproofing, which makes it possible for guests to enjoy the Inn's historic ambiance along with the peace and quiet they desire.
