Prominent Computer Manufacturer Uses SONEX® Wedges
|
||||
| When engineers at a southern California computer manufacturer decided they needed a testing environment that was completely free of reverberation, they pulled an old hemi-anechoic chamber out of storage and looked into refurbishing it. Anechoic chambers are specifically designed to isolate the internal structure from the external environment. Testing done inside the chamber will not be affected by reverberation, which can distort results. |
|
Problems immediately arose when they discovered that the chamber had been disassembled so long ago that no one remember who made it or why it was moth-balled in the first place.
They called around trying to find someone to refurbish it, but no one was willing to take on the project. That's when they brought in West General of San Jose, California, who rebuilt the chamber using the existing framework. "This was a job no one would touch," says Tavius Dyer, project manager for West General, an illbruck distributor. "We came in and looked at what they had and knew it could be redesigned and updated."
The first thing to go was the chamber's old polyurethane acoustical treatment, which didn't meet current fire codes. West General replaced it with more than 700 of illbruck's SONEXsuper Wedges. Commonly used in anechoic test chambers, these 12x12 wedges are 6 inches thick and can dramatically improve the accuracy of sound measurements by eliminating bounce-back sounds such as echo, feedback and resonances.
" I knew they were the best choice for this application," says Dyer. "Not only are the wedges made from Class 1 fire-rated willtec® foam, but I trust illbruck to know what is best to use in a hemi-anechoic chamber because their factory in Germany has an anechoic chamber specialist that we consult with. They know what they're doing and they've done a lot of theses kinds of projects."
The chamber, which was built on top of a redesigned seismic rated isolator rail system, to further control vibration, is now finished and engineers say the project was a complete success. They describe the chamber as "eerily quiet" and are happy to report that they are having no problems with sound, even at very low frequencies.
illbruck manufactures a broad range of attractive acoustical ceiling tiles, wall panels, baffles, and other noise control products for commercial and industrial applications, including: SQUARELINE® Metal Ceiling Tiles, HARMONI™ and WHITELINE™ Ceiling Tiles, CONTOUR® Wall and Ceiling Tiles, FABRITEC™ Wall Panels, SONEX® Wall Panels and Baffles, and PROSPEC® Barriers and Composites.
